Moving into your new home is exciting - but there are a number of items that you should do immediately that are easy to overlook in all the excitement. From safety checks to simple upgrades, taking care of a few key items early can save you time, money, and stress later. Here’s a practical checklist of things every new homeowner should handle right away. If you’re an established homeowner who hasn’t done any of these yet, the time is right.

New Homeowner Checklist

  • Change locks - Do you know who has keys to your home?

  • Locate water shutoff - You have your own little flood zone right under your roof.

  • Gas shutoff (if applicable) - You have a problem if you ever smell gas.

  • Locate & check the electrical breaker panel - Are the breakers labeled?

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide

detectors - So easy and it can be a lifesaver.

  • Replace HVAC filters (if applicable) - These are way too easy to ignore and shouldn’t be.

  • Inspect plumbing traps (existing home) - You won’t believe what is stuck in these.

  • Check for leaks - Look for drips under your sinks and outside spigots. Catch them early.

See my blogs that follow that address each of these in greater detail. You got this!
